Week 5 Preview: Lapeer Lightning

This week our Mt Pleasant Oilers are taking a road trip to Lapeer to take on the Lapeer Lightning. It will be a good test for our Oilers because the Lightning have one of the best programs in the state and have proved so accumulating a 27-5 record over the last three seasons. While facing the Oilers in previous seasons, the Lightning are 3-0. If the Oilers want to be successful Friday night, they are going to need to be aggressive when trying to stop the run as the Lightning have rushed the ball 34 times for 334 yards in their last contest. The biggest concern for the Oilers should be slowing down the Lightning’s Junior running back Jalen Kirkland who is coming off a monster game where he rushed for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns. Offensively, the Oilers will look to exploit their defense by getting the ball outside and picking apart their zone defense. They run a 4-3 defense typically keeping the safeties over the top. If the offense can make big plays, the defense can feed off the momentum and control the momentum of the game. Mount Pleasant's Freshmen Football Team Dominance For those unfamiliar with the ninth grade football players at Mt. Pleasant high school, let me inform you all. They are traveling to Heritage tomorrow with a record of 7-0-1, the tie coming against cross-town rival Midland. The last two years have been a struggle for the freshmen team posting records of 5-4 in 2015 and 4-5 in 2016. A large part of this year's team success is because of the involvement Varsity head coach Jason Mcintyre has with the rocket league team in Mount Pleasant. Not only does he familiarize them with the play calling and running exact plays which the high school does, but he also teaches them proper fundamentals of form and angle tackling, blocking, ball security, and basic zone coverages. In the Spotlight: Caleb Vasquez

Caleb Vasquez is coming off his final season of football at Mount Pleasant High School. The Senior Tackle has had quite a journey throughout his time as an Oiler making lifelong memories with his friends and teammates, on and off the field. Caleb was kind enough to do an interview and answer a few questions about the season, his memories at Mount Pleasant High School, with football in general, and what his future plans are looking like. -The season did not end the way you expected it to, but what can you take away from this season? "Of course I am upset we didn't make the playoffs, but I wouldn't take anything back that happened this season because it showed me and my teammates how to fight back and never give in. We started off the season 1-4 unfortunately and I knew people were doubting us, so as a team we all focused on one game at a time and we ended up winning the last 4 games of the season to end up with a positive record of 5-4" -Favorite game/memory
