Oiler Pride 9-28-17

This Friday the Oilers host the Knights of Flint Southwestern. In what has become an absolute must win situation for every game for the rest of the season, Mount Pleasant must rely on its passing game in order to keep finding success. They have had receivers with 100+ yards receiving in the last two games. Not only will they need to rely on throwing the ball, Mount Pleasant must look to senior leadership as the seniors will continue to fight for their high school football careers. Flint Southwestern has struggled heavily to find wins the last few seasons, so hopefully the Oilers can find a way to put a check in the win column and gain momentum in the second half of the season. Defensive Player of the Week

The Defensive Player of the Week recipient is Tyler Huenemann. Although Huenemann did not have the most tackles on the team he did have multiple sacks including a pivotal sack that caused a turnover on downs. Huenemann recorded 12 total tackles (8 solo). Throughout the first half the Oilers defense looked to be back to form allowing only 16 points. However after the 1st half Mount Pleasant couldn't do much against Lapeer as they scored an additional 36 points. As a team the oilers recorded 116 tackles (54 solo & 62 asst). Although the game did not go the way the oilers hoped, this team shows that they will fight till the very end. * Not affiliated with MPHS* - Spencer Arends

Offensive Player of the Week

The Mount Pleasant Oilers Offensive Player of the Week for Week 5 against Lapeer was Junior Receiver Spencer MacGregor. MacGregor had 6 receptions for 129 yards. He had an impressive 3 TD night against a very tough Lapeer Lightning Defense. The Oilers unfortunately came up short in Friday's game against the Lightning, but will host Flint Southwestern Academy/Northwestern on Friday Night, looking for that all important win to get the season back on track. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm. Go Oilers! *Not Affiliated with MPHS -Brandon Hoffman

This week against the Lapeer Lightning, the Oilers took a hard loss to the tune of 52-27. Unfortunately, this makes every game from here on out for Mount Pleasant a must-win game if they even want to have a shot at getting into the playoffs based on playoff points at 5-4. If they cannot find a way to win out, they will likely spend the rest of the season fighting to send the seniors out the best way possible while they're still in an Oiler helmet. While they found some success against a formidable Lightning defense, in the end it wasn't enough. Lapeer found little difficulty against the Oiler defense and cruised early and often. Mount Pleasant hosts Flint Southwestern this Friday for a 7:00 kickoff in hopes to save the season. Not affiliated with MPHS.

Mt. Pleasant vs Lapeer Predictions

Starting this week, the guys and I are going to predict how the week’s matchup will go for the Oilers! This weeks predictions are as follows… Matt: Lapeer 38-35 I am going to give Mt. Pleasant a little love and say that they keep this one close, but fall just short. Brandon: Mt. Pleasant 24-20 I think Mt. Pleasant bounces back after last weeks loss. It’ll be a close one but the Oilers win big on the road! Spencer: Mt. Pleasant 21-14 I believe Mt. Pleasant goes all out with the season on the line and pulls out a tough win to keep their playoff chances alive. Jon: Lapeer 49-7 I don’t see the Oilers bouncing back from the big loss last week and beating a great team like Lapeer on the road. Noah: Lapeer 56-13 The bottom line is Lapeer’s run game looks perfect so far this season, meanwhile Mt. Pleasant’s run defense has had its troubles.

Week 5 Preview: Lapeer Lightning

This week our Mt Pleasant Oilers are taking a road trip to Lapeer to take on the Lapeer Lightning. It will be a good test for our Oilers because the Lightning have one of the best programs in the state and have proved so accumulating a 27-5 record over the last three seasons. While facing the Oilers in previous seasons, the Lightning are 3-0. If the Oilers want to be successful Friday night, they are going to need to be aggressive when trying to stop the run as the Lightning have rushed the ball 34 times for 334 yards in their last contest. The biggest concern for the Oilers should be slowing down the Lightning’s Junior running back Jalen Kirkland who is coming off a monster game where he rushed for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns. Offensively, the Oilers will look to exploit their defense by getting the ball outside and picking apart their zone defense. They run a 4-3 defense typically keeping the safeties over the top. If the offense can make big plays, the defense can feed off the moment

Defensive Player of the Week

Mount Pleasant's defensive player of the week had to be Peter Smith by a small margin. In a game which saw the Oilers defense give up 400+ yards, Peter Smith had a knack for finding the ball. Smith found the ball carrier 15 times while 5 of those were solo tackles. Throughout the first three games the Oilers have played pretty solid defensive football, however this game saw too many big plays. Four of the Chemics touchdowns came from 40 plus yard plays. The Oilers travel to Lapeer for an out of conference game. If the Oilers hope to win this game they will need to control the line of scrimmage and play heads up football.

Offensive Player of the Week

Offensive Player of the week for Week 4 for the Mount Pleasant Oilers was Jayden Perry. The Senior recorded 2 TD Receptions in Friday Nights game against Midland High. His totals for the night were 3 receptions for 47 yards, totaling his all purpose yards to 79 for the evening. Although the outcome of the game was not what the Oilers expected, Perry and the rest of the Mount Pleasant team look to bounce back this Friday night as they travel to Lapeer High School. As the Oilers took on the Midland Chemics on Friday night, it appeared as though it was going to be a back and forth game. After an unsuccessful first drive by Mount Pleasant, Midland took their second play of the game 60 yards to the house on a halfback dive right up the middle by #21 Martin Money, who would go on to have a heck of a game. Mount Pleasant found success in the passing game with passes towards the sidelines, and continued to use that until QB Jackson Ostrawsky found wideout Jayden Perry in the end zone to even the score. Unfortunately, from there on out it was all Midland and Money, who went on to score 3 more touchdowns as the Chemics would go on to win 34-13, elevating their record to 3-1 and the Oilers fell to 1-3. Next week, Mount Pleasant travels to Lapeer with hopes to add another check in the win column. Go Oilers! *Not affiliated with MPHS. - Matthew Flahive

The Mount Pleasant Oilers varsity football team has a home game against their biggest rival Friday night against Midland High School. We anticipate this to be a high energy game with lots of hard hitting and a ton of points on the scoreboard. The Oilers come into the contest sporting a 1-2 record, while the Chemics are standing at 2-1. If Mount Pleasant hopes to make the playoffs, this is not necessarily a must-win game, but it would certainly help their chances as Midland is one of the better teams on the schedule.
